Dealer Spotlight: S&M Farm Supply

Sonny Smith and Mike Doody have been in the ag industry for decades. In 2019, they teamed up to create S&M Farm Supply and in 2021, they partnered with AgriMAXX to offer High Performance Wheat to their customers. We caught up with them last month to see how their wheat crop was looking in Cisne, Illinois.

“We wanted to try AgriMAXX because we heard of the high yields and always see it at the top of plot results,” says Mike. “We knew we did something right when a couple of our customer’s heard us mention we were going to team up with AgriMAXX and immediately told us we hooked up with one of the best wheat companies. That reaffirmed our decision.”

In the counties they service in Southwest Illinois, the best wheat yields they had in the past was around 87 bushel per acre. “When we went to the AgriMAXX Wheat Workshop in Okawville this past January, if we would have mentioned 87 bushel wheat, we might have been laughed at! Everyone in that room was probably 100+ bushel wheat. We started talking to other growers and everyone was striving for high yielding wheat in the southern Illinois area and they were achieving those goals. We think this year will be the year that we achieve that milestone for our customers.”

“We have adopted the AgriMAXX approach with intentional management for high yields and profit, and we appreciate the support from AgriMAXX. When we want to put on a wheat meeting for our growers, they’ve come to help teach farmers the best practices for achieving top producing wheat yields. The AgriMAXX system of counting tillers and applying the right amount of nitrogen and fungicides for each person’s farming operation sets us apart.”

And they are already seeing results out in the field. Mike told us,“Our fields look incredible. We are really happy with how they look so far.” When the AgriMAXX team visited, we looked at some of their wheat in no-till fields. “AgriMAXX 505 no-tilled into corn stalks in early October has thrived under the management of S&M Farm Supply,” says John Howell, agronomist and DSM at AgriMAXX. “Split application of nitrogen along with timely fungicide and herbicide applications have allowed it to realize its full potential.”

Co-owner Sonny Smith recognizes the importance of different plans for different operations. “We look at every field individually and are working with our customers to come up with the right approach to applications and creating an intentional management plan. At the end of the day, we want to help each of our customers deliver the highest yield and we think we will do that this year.”
